Celebrating Rick Hoyt’s Extraordinary Life
A cherished member of the triathlon and road race communities, Rick Hoyt passed away suddenly at the age of 61. Together with his father Dick, Rick, a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy, became well-known for running in competitions like the Boston Marathon. By doing so, they served as role models for millions of people with disabilities and demonstrated that everything is possible.
A Remarkable Inspirational Journey
The father-son team’s outstanding 32 Boston Marathon finishes made them as well-known as painful feet or Heartbreak Hill. The Hoyts’ amazing journey and unyielding determination inspired the creation of the Rick & Dick Hoyt Award, an annual honor given to people who uphold the advocacy and inclusiveness principles they stood for.

The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) acknowledged Rick Hoyt as an emblem of the Boston Marathon and conveyed its profound gratitude for him. The BAA expressed their appreciation for having had the opportunity to know Rick and recognized him for being a friend, mentor, pioneer, and Boston Marathon finisher.

Rick and Dick Hoyt ran more than 1,000 other races, including duathlons and triathlons, in addition to the Boston Marathon. The world was enthralled by their commitment to endurance and fortitude. They set off on a historic run and bike trip across America in 1992, reaching an incredible 3,735 miles (6,010 km) in just 45 days.
A Viable Legacy
Dick Hoyt tragically lost away in 2021, leaving a lasting legacy. They will always be remembered for their tenacity and affection. Race director for the Boston Marathon and other occasions where the Hoyts took part, Dave McGillivray, expressed his shock at the loss of both father and son. He acknowledged the enormous effect Rick had on other people’s lives and applauded Rick for his bravery, perseverance, determination, and selflessness.
