The Mad Max character The Feral Kid, who is now 50 years old, was not permitted to attend the theatre premiere
The Mad Max movies captivated audiences everywhere. The action-packed film became a beloved classic, telling the tale of a police officer in a future Australia who is “cruising the wretched back roads that have become the breeding ground of criminals hunting for petrol and scraps.”
Mel Gibson played the lead role in the second sequel, Mad Max 2, which was dubbed The Road Warrior in the US. Emil Minty, who was 8 years old at the time, played The Feral Kid, another character that fans absolutely loved.
Despite not saying a single word in the film, this young man became a major success virtually overnight for his portrayal of the grunting, uncivilized-appearing mute, which astounded millions of admirers.
Emil, however, never established a career in Hollywood outside of the stardom he achieved at such a young age.
How did Emil Minty’s story begin, then?
His sister had once been represented by a talent agency, but she insisted that her brother pursue acting opportunities instead, which is exactly what happened. Emil, an Australian who was born in late 1972 in New South Wales, first appeared in a few advertisements. His life changed after he went on the stage to perform as The Feral Kid, though.
My next interview was for the role of the Feral Kidd in Mad Max 2. In a radio interview, he remarked, “It got down to approximately three kids out of many, and we were asked to come up with a story about how we became the feral kid out in this wasteland.
“My brief account was that my mother and I were travelling in a plane with my parents when we ran out of fuel, and I was left to defend myself while my father disappeared in search of fuel. And so that is how it all started.
I was just eight years old and having a great time in the middle of all these weird costumed guys and cars in the desert. I was just having a great time while messing about and jumping into automobiles.
His mother was present during the entire filming.
“For almost three months, my mother was always with me in Broken Hills. Before I was about to perform or act in a scene, she would ground me. We practiced breathing techniques, relaxed, and calmed down while she sat me down, he recounted.
I was 8 years old, after all. I was a hyperactive person who rushed about and caused trouble. I think I was extremely professional back then when it comes to executing my task. But director George Miller was a genius because he managed to extract the desired performance from me for the part. An expert.”
The protagonist was renowned for his boomerang-throwing prowess. Emil was described as saying that Gibson taught him how to “throw a boomerang and head-butt people without hurting them” in Wensley Clarkson’s book Mel Gibson – Man on a Mission.
Emil was not permitted to attend the premiere of the finished picture because it was R-rated after it was finished shooting and released.
Emil went to see it with Gibson and his family after it was downgraded to M.
The Calgary Herald movie critic Rosemary McCracken appreciated the character of The Feral Kid, writing: “Wild of hair and short on words but stout of heart and killer with a boomerang. The toughest teen in the outback must be this one.
In spite of the film’s success, Emil didn’t pursue a career in Hollywood. He did appear as the lead in a few films, such as Fluteman and The Winds of Jarrah, and in several advertisements, but that was it.
He developed an interest in jewellery and has been employed for 25 years at the same jewellery store. I simply became more interested in getting a trade and a stable employment, he claimed. I just “faded out” of the film and television industries while continuing to work in the jewellery sector for the same employer 25 years later.
Now, Emil is a contented husband and father of two kids. He claims that his family’s way of life is typical for other families.
He told the Daily Telegraph that he was “simply so pleased to have been a part of” the famous role that he played. When people learn I’m the Feral Kid, it brightens their day.
