Relationship

Ever since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s high-profile departure from the British Royal Family in early 2020, they have been in the limelight

The couple has received praise for their work to advance equity and social justice, but they have also endured their fair share of derision and ridicule. In a recent episode of the popular animated series South Park, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were made fun of, which allegedly made the Duchess of Sussex “upset for days.”

The “South ParQ Vaccination Special” episode, which featured Meghan and Harry getting the vaccine against COVID-19, broadcast on March 10th, 2021. However, the couple was portrayed in an unfavorable way in typical South Park fashion.

Harry was portrayed as a helpless, emasculated spouse who was unable to resist his wife’s demands, while Meghan Markle was portrayed as a commanding, domineering figure who was fixated on her own public image.

Given that Meghan Markle has publicly discussed the detrimental effects that media attention has had on her mental health, it is not unexpected that she would be upset by this portrayal.

Meghan stated in a 2019 documentary that she felt vulnerable and alone because of the extreme media scrutiny she endured while she was pregnant. She also admitted that being a new mother in the public spotlight had put pressure on her.

It’s also important to remember that Meghan has previously been the subject of racist and sexist criticism from the media and famous people.

Meghan was referred to as “straight outta Compton” in a headline that appeared in the Daily Mail in 2016, when she was still dating Prince Harry. Compton is the name of the primarily black Los Angeles area where Meghan was raised. 2019 saw the firing of a BBC presenter for a tweet that compared the couple’s infant boy to a chimpanzee.

Given this situation, it makes sense that Meghan Markle would be sensitive to any type of mocking or ridicule in public, irrespective of the source. The insult is only increased by the fact that South Park, a well-known and influential program, is responsible for the mockery.

Despite the fact that South Park is renowned for its irreverent, edge-pushing humor, it’s crucial to understand that even satirical depictions can have real-world repercussions, particularly when they reinforce negative stereotypes or preexisting prejudices.

Of course, it’s also important to keep in mind that Meghan and Harry are well-known individuals who have decided to lead public lives. They have experienced censure, ridicule, and controversy before because of this.

Numerous news articles, social media posts, and opinion pieces have been written about them; some of these have been favorable and some have been negative. Being a royal family member or a celebrity in general means having to deal with this fact.

But it’s also crucial to keep in mind that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are also people with rights to their own emotions. They should not be subjected to mockery or ridicule just because they have chosen to live in the spotlight, particularly if it is based on damaging stereotypes or personal attacks.

In conclusion, given the context of her prior experiences with media surveillance and prejudice, Meghan Markle’s reported response to the South Park episode that made fun of her and Prince Harry is understandable.

While it’s crucial to acknowledge that public personalities are the target of skepticism and scrutiny, it’s also critical to keep in mind that they are also people with rights to their own emotions. Even when we disagree with them or think they are ridiculous, as a community we should work to be more tolerant and respectful of others.
