Do you remember Phoebe Cates? This is the reason the “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” star decided to end her acting career

One of the most well-known bikini scenes was captured by Phoebe Cates. Cates became an icon after posing topless by the pool in the 1982 film Fast Times at Ridgemont High. It was described as “the most memorable bikini-drop in cinema history” by Rolling Stone magazine.

Acting appeared to be in Cates’ blood since he was born into a family of actors and directors.

She even received a scholarship to the School of American Ballet when she was a teenager and enjoyed dancing, but she was forced to stop at the age of 14 due to a knee injury.

She swapped out her love of dancing for modelling at the time. After appearing in numerous teen-targeted magazines, Cates became a sensation among teenagers. She appeared on the cover of Seventeen magazine four times, among other publications. But eventually, she decided she’d had enough and switched to acting in movies.

“It was always the exact same thing. I started doing it just for the money after a while,” she said of her modelling career.

Cates first met her agent for movies at a party at New York’s renowned Studio 54, and she later received acting instruction from Robert Ravan, who founded The Actors’ Circle in the city.

“I simply understood that I did not want to attend college. And that if I could get a few movies or something that would be a great way to get out of college. Seriously. She admitted as much to The Daily Item in 1985.

Cates made her acting debut in the 1982 film Paradise as Sarah. She went on to star in other movies like Experienced and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

“In this industry, a woman must be willing to strip in order to succeed. Why not show off your good body if you have one? She asked, referring to the famous scene.

At the time of its release, Fast Times at Ridgemont High featured well-known actors in the making, such as Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Eric Stoltz, and Forest Whitaker.

Well, because we were so young when we made it, it was a funny thing. Jennifer Jason Leigh told The Daily News, “And then it came out and it was this big hit, where you’d go to the theatre and people would say the lines with it, and people had undoubtedly seen the movie over and over again.”

Cates’ career flourished, but she ultimately made the decision to give acting up.

The former teen actress and model now runs a business. She and her family live in Manhattan’s Upper East Side at 1283 Madison Avenue, where her store Blue Tree is situated.

She works a 9 to 5 job selling clothes, gifts, and perfumes.

Phoebe Cates’ breathtaking beauty remains one aspect of her that hasn’t changed.
