Princess Diana’s brother breaks his silence after beginning whirlwind affair with podcast cohost 18 years younger.
Earl Charles Spencer finally spoke up about his brief romance with his podcast cohost, Dr. Cat Jarman, who is 18 years his junior.
“I am too old for hearts & flowers stuff, but the best way to describe it is that with Cat, I can be myself,” Spencer, Princess Diana’s younger brother, told the Daily Mail. “She knows who I am. Who I actually am. I don’t need to pretend to be someone I’m not. And she gets the best out of me.”
As he navigates his divorce from Karen Spencer, he is experiencing a new relationship dynamic with Jarman.
“The truth is, I’m 18 years older than Cat, so it wasn’t even possible… I’ve never been with someone much younger. I wasn’t even thinking about romance. I was near the end of a marriage. It just wasn’t a possibility,” Spencer told the newspaper. “I’ve never attempted a hard sale on Cat. She’s highly savvy and emotionally mature. With her, I don’t pretend to be someone I’m not. She knows exactly who I am—and who I am not.”
“It really is nice to be with someone who wants to do stuff,” he said afterwards. Take today. We could have come to this event and slept in the hotel, but we had plans to see a lagoon this morning. It’s great to find someone that is lively and interested.”
Jarman, 42, and Spencer, 60, met in 2021 when the Norwegian archaeologist investigated Althorp House. In 2023, the two started a historical podcast called “The Rabbit Hole Detectives,” with the Rev. Richard Coles.
Spencer announced his separation from his third wife in June. Karen and Spencer met on a blind date and got married in 2011. They have a daughter, Lady Charlotte Diana.
“It is immensely sad,” he previously told the Daily Mail about the breakup of his marriage. “I just want to devote myself to all my children, as well as my grandchildren, and I wish Karen every joy in the future.”
Karen later thanked her almost 100,000 Instagram followers for their support.
“Just wanted to say that I have been overwhelmed by the messages of love and support,” she wrote on her own social media account. “Thank you; it has meant a lot to me. I’m simply processing at the moment. Will get back to you soon.”
Spencer and Karen’s marriage apparently dissolved when he was writing his biography, “A Very Private School.”
Spencer’s memoir detailed how he was sexually abused as a child. Spencer kept the abuse a secret for years. However, Spencer realised he needed assistance after two disastrous marriages.
He previously told Fox News Digital, “I was so confused by my endless romantic disasters, deep unhappiness, and two divorces.” “I also wanted to take care of my kids. That was the spur, in fact. In order to be a better father, I wanted to improve for them. That was my goal, though I’m not sure if they would concur that I succeeded. And I believe that I would have simply continued to cope if I hadn’t been a parent. Surprisingly, saying it aloud helped. Although it didn’t address the underlying cause of the issue, it did lead me to pursue more candid therapy.
Spencer claimed that, particularly since authoring his book, he had “really turned a corner” in the previous three to four months. He continues to practise breathing techniques, tai chi, and “a very effective” treatment for PTSD.
“I’ve got a whole armoury of support techniques to try and get to a better place,” he said.
