Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had to make a difficult decision about Princess Lilibet’s christening.

Sweet Lilibet Diana, Harry and Meghan’s daughter, was born on June 4, 2021. Her name pays honor to both her grandma and great-grandmother. However, because the couple believed they had made the correct decision in naming their daughter Lilibet, they faced criticism from a number of royal specialists.

According to a source cited by Page Six, the Sussexes claimed before the baby’s birth that it would be extremely unlikely for their daughter to be named after her grandmother, the late Princess Diana, because they believed the name would not only come with responsibility but would also “increase the public interest in the child’s life.” At the same time, the source suggested that Diana may be the middle name of Harry and Meghan’s second child, which proved to be correct.

Lilibet was the Queen’s childhood nickname.

Apparently, she used to pronounce her name that way when she was very little, and her grandpa, King George V, continued to call her so throughout his life. Prince Philip also referred to his queen by this moniker.

According to The Guardian, just after his marriage to Queen Elizabeth, the Duke of Edinburgh penned a letter to his mother that stated, “Lilibet is the one ‘thing’ in the world which is totally real to me.”

Richard Kay, a royal analyst, is among those who have questioned the couple over their name. He claimed in a Daily Mail essay that Harry and Meghan went too far when they named the girl Lilibet.

“There is a risk in giving the baby the name Lilibet, the Queen’s intimate family nickname, despite the fact that they intend to use the diminutive ‘Lili’ for their daughter,” Kay wrote, according to Express.

“Will it be considered a pretentious decision for a royal infant who is seventh in line to the throne but will grow up on the other side of the planet speaking with an American accent?”

He went on to say, “How might Prince Charles feel about his fifth grandchild carrying such an intimate family pet name that he has never used himself?” It is tempting to question if Harry would have been so confident in his decision if his grandfather, Prince Philip – the only close family member entitled to address the Queen as ‘Lilibet’ – had still lived.”

Lilibet met her British family members while celebrating her first birthday on the grounds of Frogmore Cottage.

Her baptism took place at the Sussexes’ family home in Montesito, California, in front of 20 to 30 people.

“I can confirm that the Archbishop of Los Angeles, the Rev John Taylor, christened Princess Lilibet Diana on Friday, March 3,” the Sussexes said in a statement.

Lilibet’s christening occurred precisely six months after her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, died.

However, this is not the first time Harry and Meghan have chosen a special date for an announcement. When they announced Meghan’s pregnancy with Lilibet on Valentine’s Day in 2021, it coincided with the date Princess Diana announced she was expecting Harry. The pair later revealed that they only discovered this link after Meghan announced her pregnancy.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also disclosed that Tyler Perry, a filmmaker, is their baby Lilibet’s godfather. The couple first met Perry in 2018, when he sent Meghan a letter of support during the heated circumstances with her father, Thomas Markle that occurred prior to the royal wedding.

During that time, Thomas Markle was embroiled in a controversy because staged images of him preparing for the wedding were leaked, causing a schism between him and Meghan, and resulted in him missing the wedding. Perry’s support for Meghan throughout this tough time strengthened their relationship.

The tiny girl’s name is now Princess Lilibet Diana, and her parents believe it is her birthright to be called Princess.

Many people have wondered why Archie and Lilibet were given the titles of Prince and Princess, but the answer is actually quite straightforward.

George V established the norms that still apply today in 1917. He determined that the children of any Sovereign’s sons “should have and at all times hold and enjoy the style title or attribute of Royal Highness with their titular dignity of Prince or Princess appended to their respective Christian names or with their other titles of honour.” So, when the Queen died and King Charles became monarch, Archie and Lilibet were eligible for their own royal titles.
