18-year-old Olympic hopeful tragically passes away before the games.
We regret to inform you that J.J. Rice, 18, died unexpectedly. This outstanding young man was scheduled to represent Tonga’s kitefoiler squad at the Paris Olympics this summer. J.J. would have been not only an outstanding athlete, but also the first Caucasian to represent Tonga in the Olympics.
Kitefoiling, a thrilling activity in which players ride a board up to 1m above the water’s surface, was just named an Olympic sport. J.J.’s talent and commitment to the sport were enormous. Countless individuals from all around the world loved his abilities and regarded him as a favorite to win a shiny medal.
J.J. was tragically killed on June 15th while free diving from a boat in Faleloa.
He may have experienced a “shallow water blackout.” Despite their
best efforts, people around him were unable to revive him.
J.J.’s sister, Lily, turned to Facebook to express her grief and commemorate her great brother.
She characterized J.J. as the most amazing brother anyone could ask for, and she shared his enormous passion for kiteflying and made friends all over the world. Lily also mentioned J.J.’s outstanding talent in a variety
of undertakings, highlighting the significant hole his absence creates in their life.
J.J. and Lily, who were born in the United States to British parents, grew up in Ha’apai, where their family runs a tourist resort. J.J.’s interest in kite foilboarding began at a young age, and his enormous skills and determination showed potential right away.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to J.J.’s family, friends, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. His memory will live on, and his contribution to the world of kitefoiling will be recognized forever.
