Tom Selleck had ‘no desire’ to be an actor and deems his 4-decade Hollywood career ‘accidental’.
Tom Selleck did not set out to be an actor, let alone the star of two blockbuster shows, “Magnum, P.I.” and “Blue Bloods.”
Speaking to People for their cover story on the actor, he said, “It’s basically the story of an unexpected career. I had never taken an acting class. “I had no training and no desire.”
“People would say, ‘Oh, he was bitten by the acting bug’ or, ‘He wanted to be a star,'” he said. “I’ve never talked like that in my life. I only wanted to obtain a job and work.”
Selleck reminisced on his life and career in his new memoir, “You Never Know,” which will be released May 7.
Regarding writing the memoir, he told People, “I don’t have the hooks that a lot of people do.” “I didn’t have this horrible life or work on myself. Although I’ve experienced my fair share of ups and downs, I’ve been extremely blessed.”
Even though Selleck considers himself to be someone who “just wanted to get a job and work,” he claimed that the biography “is a lot about failing, endless failures.”
“You had best have a voracious hunger if you want to pursue a career in acting. And I made an effort to convey that… so it was a quite lengthy journey.”
Selleck received a basketball scholarship to USC while studying business administration before obtaining a role as a basketball player in a Pepsi commercial. He next featured on “The Young and the Restless,” as well as in Westerns, until obtaining his breakout role in “Magnum P.I.” in 1980, at the age of 35.
In 1983, he met his wife Jillie Mack while she was starring in the musical “Cats,” and the couple married in 1987. They have one kid together, Hannah. Selleck has a son, Kevin, with ex-wife Jacqueline Ray.
The Michigan-born singer says his favorite thing about his wife is “the friendship” they have, adding, “And Jillie’s sense of humor.”
Mack and Selleck spend a lot of time together at his property in California, where they frequently go over the scripts for the future “Blue Bloods” series.
“As an executive producer on the show, I’m one of the last guys to see it, and I’m a good editor,” Selleck remarked.
Later this year, “Blue Bloods” will begin its final season. The 79-year-old is appreciative of his long but unanticipated career.
“I’ve had a very good life, a very lucky life,” he stated. “I don’t know if it’s what I figured I’d be doing, but it’s with a lot of gratitude.”
