Renowned actor James Earl Jones, famous for voicing Darth Vader, died at 93.
Actor James Earl Jones, known for his thunderous voice in Star Wars and The Lion King, died at the age of 93.
Representatives confirmed to Deadline that the actor died peacefully at his home in Dutchess County, NY.
Jones was born on January 17, 1931, in Arkabutla, Mississippi, and reared by his grandparents in Dublin, Michigan. He suffered with stuttering from a young age but eventually became one of the most recognizable and distinctive voices in film history.
“I used to stutter. “I could not talk,” Jones said in a 1996 interview. “So my first year of school was my first mute year, and those mute years lasted until I reached high school.”
He tried hard to overcome the issue, and one of his teachers advised him to practice reading poetry aloud to enhance his pronunciation.
His deep booming voice became his identity over time, allowing him to land some of cinema’s most iconic and memorable parts.
Jones’ decades-long acting career began in 1957, when he made his Broadway debut. He rapidly conquered the stage and earned a name for himself, earning a Tony Award for his performance in The Great White Hope in 1969. This identical part, which he played in the 1970 film adaption, earned him a Golden Globe Award and his first Oscar nomination.
Jones won a second Tony Award for Fences, as well as a Special Tony Award for lifetime achievement.
When he began voicing the renowned nemesis Darth Vader in the Star Wars saga, beginning with 1977’s Star Wars, he secured his place in the business. For decades, he voiced Vader in the 2 sequels The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the prequel Revenge of the Sith, and the spin-off Rogue One. Jones made a deal to use his voice in future projects employing artificial intelligence and archive recordings after he retires in 2022.
His depiction of Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King cemented his status as a landmark voice in cinema history.
Throughout his long and successful career, Jones appeared in a variety of films, including Conan the Barbarian, Coming to America, Field of Dreams, The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and The Sandlot, among others.
Jones got an Honorary Academy Award in 2011, joining a select group of actors who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.
In 2022, Broadway’s Cort Theatre was renamed the James Earl Jones Theatre in his honor, demonstrating his reputation as a theatrical actor.
Fans and co-stars paid tribute to him after his death.
“There will never be another with his unique blend of graces,” wrote actor LeVar Burton.
Rest in peace. James Earl Jones.
