A Tribute by Denise Alexander
With heavy hearts, we remember the late Jacklyn Zeman, who died unexpectedly on May 9 after a brief struggle with cancer. Only three days after her 70th birthday and less than 2 weeks after her final episode of General Hospital aired on April 27, we said goodbye to a dear friend and colleague.
Denise Alexander, who played Dr. Lesley Webber on General Hospital, wrote a poignant message in memory of Zeman. She expressed her sorrow and offered fond recollections of their friendship. “Oh, girl, I cannot stop crying because I keep hearing you and laughing. I have always admired and treasured your sweetness, wit, brilliance, and exquisite goodness. The greatest hugs, too. Alexander wrote, “I shall always love you.” On May 15, Soap Hub received these lovely words.
Denise Alexander played Dr. Lesley Webber on General Hospital in 1973, while Jacklyn Zeman played Nurse Bobbie Spencer in 1977. They grew close on and off camera over the years. Their bond demonstrated the unique connections created among the program is cast.
Although not all of Alexander’s former cast mates publicly recognized Zeman, Anthony Geary, who played Luke Spencer, paid a prominent homage. Geary sent an exclusive message to TVLine on May 11, a few days following Zeman’s death. He commended her professionalism and the unusual lack of criticism in her presence. “I never heard her speak negatively about any actor, crew member, or colleague. In actuality, Jackie never spoke poorly of anyone in front of me. “I have realized that this characteristic is extremely rare in a highly competitive profession where ego, feelings, and emotions are the lifeblood,” Geary wrote. It reflects Zeman’s character and the influence she had on those around her.
Frank Valentini, a soap opera executive producer, was the first to report Zeman’s passing. He regarded her as a shining star, a consummate professional, and a source of great energy on set. While her absence will be sadly lamented, her positive attitude will be remembered.
As news of Zeman’s death spread online, condolences poured in. Her General Hospital TV family lamented the loss of the 70-year-old actress, complimenting her compassion and optimistic attitude even in difficult times. Her legacy will be revered indefinitely.
Laura Wright, who played Carly Spencer, Zeman’s on-screen daughter, expressed thanks for their time together. Wright praised Zeman as a beautiful soul with intriguing stories, a contagious spirit, and an extraordinary existence. She sent a beautiful tribute on Instagram.
Tamara Braun, who also played Carly, joined in honoring Zeman’s legacy. In her own Instagram tribute, she expressed her shock and loss, hoping for the chance to hug Zeman again and laugh together. Braun underlined the sincere chats they had, emphasizing the depth of their relationship.
Former co-stars also reached out to pay tribute to Zeman. Sarah Joy Brown, the first actor to play Zeman’s daughter on General Hospital, tweeted a heartfelt homage. She characterized Zeman as lovely on the inside and out, and she conveyed her regret on behalf of everyone who cared for her. Brown acknowledged Zeman’s impact on her life and success.
Jacklyn Zeman has left behind a legacy of love, resilience, and kindness. Her presence will be sorely missed, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. As we bid farewell to a wonderful talent, we remember her with thanks and affection.
