A legendary career with a lasting legacy.
Actor James B. Sikking, best known for his roles on television shows such as “Hill Street Blues” and “Doogie Howser,” has made an unmistakable impression on the entertainment industry. With 159 productions under his belt, including significant films like “The Pelican Brief,” “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock,” “Outland,” and “Fever Pitch,” Sikking’s talent and range were evident.
Sikking died on July 13, 2024, aged 90, after a battle with dementia. Many people cherish the legacy he left behind. Family and friends gathered at his Los Angeles home to offer comfort and support in his dying hours. His publicist, Cynthia Snyder, stated that he died “peacefully and surrounded by family.” Born and bred in Los Angeles, Sikking discovered his interest for acting close to home. After graduating from El Segundo High School, he studied Theater Arts at UCLA. His college years were also marked by his service in the Army, an experience that would shape his future work.
Sikking reflected on his time in the Army, revealing how his drill instructor influenced his portrayal of Howard on “Hill Street Blues.” The drill instructor’s powerful presence and perfectly groomed appearance inspired Sikking. He dressed Howard in military garb, including jump boots, and stated, “It had to be a very militaristic look. When people questioned where I got the concept for his look, I explained that it was the same look I had in the Army.”
