Kevin Bacon uses prosthetics to live a normal life: This sucks.

Films like ‘Footloose’ and ‘JFK’ made Bacon a star.

Kevin Bacon is no stranger to celebrity.

After decades in Hollywood, the accomplished actor has become a household name. But he once chose to attempt life away from the spotlight. He attempted to conceal himself using prosthetics and accessories, but he was dissatisfied with the results.

“I’m not complaining, but my face is very recognized,” Bacon said in a new interview with Vanity Fair. “Putting my hat and spectacles on will only help to a limited amount.”

To completely become unrecognizable, he stated, “I went to a special effects makeup artist, had consultations, and asked him to construct me a prosthetic disguise.”

He got a new nose and teeth with the help of a makeup artist. After adding accessories, he went to The Grove, a prominent outdoor retail mall in Los Angeles.

“No one recognized me,” he recalled. “People were shoving past me, which was not very pleasant. Nobody said, “I love you.” I had to stand in line to get, I don’t know, an f—ing coffee or whatever. I was like, “This sucks.” “I want to return to being famous.”

Bacon later claimed in the interview that he had always craved celebrity, even as a child.

“My father, Edmund Bacon, an urban planner, was well-known in Philadelphia, which is, in some respects, a little pond. But, for me, it was a large pond,” he said. “I witnessed him being recognized by people as he walked down the street, and that was a tremendous motivator in my life.”

“Honestly, I wanted to be more famous than him. And you can put me down on the shrink’s couch. We could talk about it for a while. But it was definitely motivating.”

Bacon’s motivations extend beyond celebrity. He told Vanity Fair that nearly 50 years after making his feature film debut in 1978’s “Animal House,” he remains committed to the art of acting.

“Yes, I’m still hungry, and I still believe the finest work is ahead of me,” he remarked. “I don’t think this is a competition. I’m competing with myself. I undoubtedly did this in the past, but I’m not looking at this actor and thinking, ‘I wish I was him’ or ‘I wish I had what he has.’

“I don’t reach out to individuals just to seek a job. It’s because I believe that being acknowledged for what you do as an artist by someone else is a good feeling. It feels fantastic when someone I admire approaches me and says, “Hey, I really like that” or “You did a good job.”

He also slammed the film industry, claiming that most of it is “hierarchical bulls—,” which leads to “this underlying notion that we need to be competing with each other.”

“So, anywhere I can feel like I’m part of a community that is helping each other create these things that I believe are extremely important, I want to do that,” Bacon emphasized.
