Hoda Kotb’s Eye Emergency

Hoda Kotb, the renowned host of the TODAY Show, had a terrible incident on February 1, 2024. Despite having a “medical emergency,” she bravely opted to work. During the live broadcast, she admitted that she had a contact lens caught in her eye. This may not seem like a huge thing to others, but anyone who has been through it understands how painful and frightening it can be.

Kotb minimized the gravity of the situation, but her co-host, Jenna Bush Hager, expressed immediate alarm. She inquired whether there was a medical emergency, to which Kotb replied that she had planned to attend the eye doctor but had run out of time. Kotb requested viewers for help on how to remove the trapped contact lens.

Despite her discomfort, Hager attempted to continue with the broadcast as scheduled. However, following a commercial break, she revealed that Kotb had lost her vision because her other contact lens had slipped out. It was a tough time for both of them.

Thankfully, TODAY viewers rallied to Kotb’s assistance. They began offering tips and tactics for removing a stuck contact lens. Kotb even put some of the suggestions into practice live on the broadcast, using a portable mirror.

One viewer recommended pulling the eyelid all the way up and staring all the way down to allow the contact lens to glide down. Kotb enthusiastically tried this proposal, as you can see in the video below.

Despite the initial fright, Kotb was eventually able to remove one of the contacts with the assistance of the audience. It was a reminder of the power of community and how we can all join together to help one another, especially in unforeseen circumstances.
