According to Phil Collins, he can “barely hold a drumstick anymore.”
Phil Collins, the lead singer and drummer for Genesis, is one of the most well-known artists in the world, having won eight Grammy awards. Along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, he is one of only three musicians to have sold over 100 million records as a solo artist and band member.
Collins, who was born in London, England on January 30, 1951, to artistic parents, had a deep affinity for music-making.
Collins remembered that when he was five years old, his uncle had constructed a drum set for him using toy drums, triangles, cymbals, and tambourines. He said to Interview Magazine, “The old cliché is, ‘Well, at least it will keep him quiet.'”
He soon began appearing in shows at the yacht club owned by his parents.
“I bought Please Please Me once,” I recall. I used to face the mirror while setting up my drums and turning on the record player loudly enough to prevent myself from seeing what I was doing.
Then, at the age of 14, I enrolled in a class to learn how to read drum sheet music. I assumed that after my time in rock and roll was over, I would need to find employment as a dance band or orchestra pit musician. I so studied how to read drum sheet music, but I quickly discovered that my reading ability was far inferior to what I could play instinctively.
In 1970, Collin experienced a life-altering event. He was already performing in a few bands when he saw an advertisement for a drummer needed by a band named Genesis. After he made the decision to contact them, the rest is history. During Collins’s initial years as a member, the group put out five albums featuring chart-topping hits.
Collins replaced the departing lead singer and group founder of Genesis. He played the drums and sang as well. Regarding his new position, he admitted that he didn’t feel entirely at ease, but he filled in when the band couldn’t find a singer.
Collins not only played with Genesis but also had a highly successful solo career. He quickly rose to the top of the music industry with classics like I Don’t Care Anymore, You Can’t Hurry Love, and In The Air Tonight.
“Having been with Genesis for 25 years, I felt it was time to change direction in my musical life,” Collins stated when he made the decision to leave the group and concentrate on his solo career.
In 2017, he made the decision to rejoin the band, though. The pandemic forced them to postpone their previously arranged world tour, The Last Domino.
And just when supporters were getting excited to watch the quartet perform live, Collins gave an interview to BBC Breakfast that raised questions about his health. He and the other members of the band declared that Collins would only be singing and that his son Nicholas would be handling the drumming.
“While Nic is an excellent drummer, he has the ability to sound like early Phil.” That was always pretty exciting for Mike and me, Tony Banks of Genesis stated.
The artist said, “I’d love to but you know, I mean, I can barely hold a stick with this hand,” when asked why he isn’t behind the drums. Thus, some physical objects obstruct the path.
“It’s very frustrating that I’m kind of physically challenged because I’d love to be playing up there with my son,” he said, adding that he’s not sure if he wants to continue touring.
“I think it’s putting it to bed to some extent, because we’re all men of our age,” he remarked. “Yes, I believe that generally speaking, I’m not sure if I want to drive anymore.”
Collins has some health problems in the last two years that made it difficult for him to get back on his feet. In an interview with Billboard, he disclosed that following surgery in 2009, he suffered from a displaced vertebra and nerve damage. In addition, he had a foot fracture that made him feel as though he was walking “on sticks.”
