HEARTSETS Michael J. Fox, take that: “I don’t fear that”!
After a valiant 33 years of battling Parkinson’s disease, Michael J. Fox now manages the symptoms.
He uses medicine to fight against the paralysis of his face muscles, which results in uncontrollable motions. Despite his difficulties, Fox inspires many people with his optimistic view on life.
After spending some time with Fox, director Davis Guggenheim longed for a similar viewpoint. Fox said, “It’s the gift that keeps on taking, but it has changed my life in so many positive ways,” acknowledging that Parkinson’s is a complicated gift.
Fox’s path hasn’t been simple. In the midst of multiple surgeries and fractures, he experienced depressive episodes. Still, he maintains his fortitude, declaring, “I’m a tough son of a b.”
Fox, who is 62 years old and aware of his mortality, is not terrified of the future. He is aware that he might decide one day, “I’m not going out today.”
Fox is resolute despite the challenges of living with Parkinson’s disease, even though he doesn’t anticipate living to be 80 years old. Although he recognizes that Parkinson’s is “banging on the door,” he is prepared to live with the condition for however long it takes.
