Michael J. Fox, a beloved actor best recognized for his memorable performance in “Back to the Future,” is going through a devastating loss. Gus, a 12-year-old Great Dane-Labrador mix who was his devoted buddy, went unexpectedly. Fox has been through the highs and lows of the last twelve years with Gus by his side, and now the actor must face life without his devoted companion.
Fox posted a heartbreaking photo of Gus with his one million social media followers along with the moving statement, “Gus—great dog and loyal friend, we’ll miss you.” Page 220-222 of Fox’s 2020 memoir, “No Time like the Future: an Optimist Considers Mortality,” was mentioned next to the picture. Fox calls Gus his “wonder dog” in the book, calling him a devoted friend who made everyone around him happy.
Gus was very important in Fox’s life, especially during his fight, which the public has been aware of for more than 20 years with Parkinson’s disease. Fox highlights in his memoir how much Gus meant to him and how much the family will miss him as a treasured member.
In an essay about their partnership, Fox stated, “I didn’t save Gus. You could say he saved me, although he wouldn’t be so arrogant to say so. The actor admits that during his health issues, Gus’ unwavering love helped lessen his emotions of loneliness.
Fox claimed that having a dog by his side provided him with a reassuring feeling of companionship. He feels that although having a chronic condition can cause loneliness, a dog can bring much-needed company and open doors.
Gus even contributed to Fox’s physical recuperation. Fox was dependent on a wheelchair following surgery to remove a tumor from his spinal cord in 2018. Gus was the one who gave him the confidence to walk again. Fox narrates with affection, “He sat in front of the wheelchair directly in front of me and kind of circled it with this low kind of woof woof, woof woof. “It’s going to be okay,” I replied as he turned to face me.
