According to her family, CoCo Lee, who provided the voice for “Mulan,” committed suicide at the age of 48.

The sisters of the Hong Kong singer, who on Wednesday announced her passing on Instagram, claimed that she had battled depression for a number of years.

After attempting suicide on Sunday, CoCo Lee passed away. Aged 48, she was.

The singer-songwriter’s older sisters Carol and Nancy Lee, who were also born in Hong Kong, shared the heartbreaking news on social media on Wednesday, confirming that she had passed away earlier in the day. In a Facebook and Instagram statement, they claimed that CoCo had been dealing with depression for a number of years.

The sisters said, “CoCo had been depressed for a few years, but over the last few months, her condition had gotten much worse.” We are here to deliver the most heartbreaking news: CoCo’s condition has drastically worsened over the past three months. Despite her best efforts to fight her sadness and get help, the demon inside of her ultimately won.

They said, “She tried suicide at home on July 2nd and was admitted to the hospital. She was in a coma and despite the hospital staff’s best efforts to cure and revive her, she passed away on July 5.

Asian pop icon CoCo became well-known in the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s. Her debut album, CoCo Lee, was the best-selling record in Asia in 1996 when she signed Sony Music Entertainment, according to Reuters.

She later transitioned to Mandopop and issued albums in both Cantonese and English. She launched her debut English album, Just No Other Way, in 1999 after her single “Do You Want My Love” reached the top of the American charts.

The classic movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’s inspirational song “A Love before Time” by her was nominated for Best Original Song at the 2001 Academy Awards. At the occasion that year, she performed the song live.

Notably, the pop star also sang “Reflection,” Mulan, the female warrior, in the Mandarin version of the movie Mulan. She also gave the voice for Mulan. She made three movie appearances, two of which were Lee Xin’s No Tobacco and Master of Everything.

CoCo was wed to Canadian businessman and former Li & Fung CEO Bruce Rockowitz. She was the stepmother to her husband’s two girls even though she had no biological children.

In 2023, CoCo’s singing career will turn 30. This was disclosed by CoCo’s sisters on Instagram.

“CoCo is also known to have worked tirelessly to open up a new world for Chinese singers in the international music scene, while she went all out to shine for the Chinese,” the statement read.

The CoCo family is appreciative and proud to have such an amazing sister. We give God praise for sending us such a great angel.

In honor of CoCo, Carol and Nancy thanked the medical professionals who have been caring for their sister over the past few days and asked followers to be upbeat in the world.
