This adored Hollywood celebrity vanished after a terrible tragedy left her permanently damaged.
Sydne Rome, who began her career in Europe and charmed millions, was regarded as the golden girl from the American Midwest. Sadly, she ultimately made the decision to leave Hollywood behind after an accident left her permanently wounded.
While still in high school, Rome first expressed an interest in acting. She didn’t fall for the acting industry despite the fact that neither of her parents or even a member of her family were actors.
“There was nothing in the family that should have given me my craze for acting,” she claimed to the Daily News in 1974. “My mother is just “mom,” and my father ran a plastics company. I have two younger sisters and two younger brothers.
Rome had other plans for the future, but the desire to be an actor lingered, and she made the decision to follow her heart by relocating to Pennsylvania and enrolling at Pittsburgh University’s renowned Carnegie Tech School of Acting.
I had intended to enroll at Northwestern University following high school. However, I was advised to attend Tech if I were genuinely interested in performing. I’m pleased I did, she said, telling The Pittsburgh Press.
She received coaching from people like Bern Stearn and voice actor Edith Skinner while in college, and as a result, she was cast in various theatre performances, including Tania in Anton Chekhov’s The Sea Gull and Tania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Rome, however, had trouble getting to Hollywood once she graduated from college, the place where aspirations come true. After another year at the Pasadena Playhouse and being turned down for the role in the movie Candy, she made the decision to try her luck in Europe.
In an interview with the Daily News, Rome recalled that period of her life, saying, “I had a dreadful experience in Rome with young Italian filmmakers who wanted me to play in the nude. She had a significant breakthrough in 1972, earning the moniker “the up-and-coming Roman Polanski’s film what? “Jean Harlow or Raquel Welch, the ticking Sex Bomb of the Nineteen Eighties,”
“[Brigitte] is fantastic, energetic, quite open, and incredibly available. Every man’s dream, she is. I might appear less accessible at first glance. But I believe viewers will reconsider and change their minds. Rome once reacted angrily to Bardot comparisons by asserting, “And I am a better actor than Bardot. I was averse to doing it. Now, I see things differently. Nude play has become a staple of our profession. I don’t mind it as long as the script actually calls for it and it doesn’t contain graphic love scenes.
Rome co-starred with David Bowie in the final film of the 1970s, Just a Gigolo, directed by David Hemming’s. She is rumored to have had an affair with Bowie.
“We were close. They hadn’t found the leading man, I was informed as I prepared to travel to Berlin for the initial script readings. Bowie [Bowie] was interested in Germany during that time between the two world wars, so I assumed David may be interested in playing this role. I gave him a call and requested his permission to send the script. He agreed when we done so, she told NME in 2021.
I first connected with him when he asked me to travel with him to Paris to watch the film’s premiere, and I jumped at the chance to work on Just a Gigolo right away, says Rome. “We spent a year together. He was really entertaining and tasty.
Rome moved back to Italy at the start of the 1980s and started making music, releasing many albums.
She once experienced great sadness over the fact that her American career never really took off the way she had hoped.
Except for America, I’m widely recognized all around the world, she said. “I adore doing creative work, but I despise the business aspect of my ‘job.’ An actress may start to feel like just another corporate asset, that no one is interested in her other than what she can offer as a transaction.
No, it’s not only having passes made; I can take care of it, Sydne remarked, “Being in films can be dreadful for a woman. However, it takes years of hard work before you earn anyone’s genuine respect. Actresses aren’t intended to be intelligent people.
“Perhaps that’s why so many actors and actresses feel insecure. The women more so than the men,” she said in conclusion. We cry on each other’s shoulders and I have a lot of actress friends. Actors are actually good at making friends because they don’t truly belong to any one class; they aren’t upper-class, middle-class, or lower-class people. They blend in well everywhere.
Rome wed Dr. Roberto Bernabei after getting divorced from her first husband Emilio Lari. Together, the two adopted Vanessa and Jesse, two twin sisters.
Rome was engaged in a car accident in 2009 with one of her daughters when she ended up driving off the road and colliding with a tree. Her face was severely damaged when the airbag blew up
Rome claimed, “I went to the hospital and they stitched up my skin,” adding that the medical staff was unaware that the accident had damaged Rome’s face muscles. “That part of my face eventually became paralyzed, so I underwent physical therapy ten years ago, and today I’m a little bit better.”
She continued acting in numerous productions, mostly in Italy, despite the wounds that left her face disjointed. She had been a star in the Italian drama series Don Matteo, participating in 53 episodes between 2021 and 2022, among the others.
