The late Queen Elizabeth forged unique ties with Australia and its people during her lengthy 70-year reign.

2 years after her coronation, she made her first trip to the continent. She reportedly visited there fifteen more times while in power, and she eagerly anticipated each of those trips.

As a constitutional monarch, the Queen fulfilled significant ceremonial and symbolic duties, one of which has now been handed down to her heir, King Charles the Third. However, she was not involved in the day-to-day operations of the Australian Government.

Australians had the opportunity to vote in a referendum in 1999 on whether or not they wanted the Queen to continue serving as their head of state. Ultimately, 55% of voters chose to maintain the monarchy, largely because they were worried about what the model of a future republic would resemble.

Former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who held office from 2015 to 2018, has in the past called Australians “Elizabethans.” In 2016, he addressed a large crowd gathering in Sydney University’s Great Hall and remarked, “The vast majority of Australians have never known any other head of state except the Queen.

Few people today, whether monarchists or republicans, can claim that they are not Elizabethans since she is so revered and respected.

Numerous influential individuals, including politicians, visited Britain prior to the referendum and met with the Queen.

Patrick Lionel Djargun Dobson, a Yawuru elder, was one among those individuals. In 1999, he met Her Majesty alongside a delegation of Aboriginal people.

The late Queen Elizabeth II wrote a letter to the citizens of Sydney in November 1986, which was 36 years ago. The Queen Victoria Building, one of Australia’s oldest structures, houses a vault where the letter is currently hidden and won’t be opened for another 63 years.

The Queen’s signature appears on a letter that is addressed to the “Right & Honorable Lord Mayor of Sydney, Australia.” It has been locked away in a glass case inside a confined space in its dome ever since it was written.

“Greetings. Please open this letter and deliver my message to the people of SYDNEY on an appropriate day to be determined by you by the year 2085 A.D., read the Queen’s order.

Except for the Queen, no one else has ever seen the letter’s contents.

Peace and love
